Working towards a safe, fair and healthy sporting environment
What we do
The sporting landscape is ever evolving with new and emerging integrity threats arising all the time that jeopardise the core values inherent to sport.
Sport Integrity Australia’s role has never been more important.
Our mandate is to be at the forefront of changes in the sporting landscape, to maintain the fairness and spirit of sport.
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to play in a safe, fair, inclusive and respectful environment that rewards nothing but hard work, integrity and good sportsmanship.
- Sport Integrity Australia can receive information that relates to Child Safeguarding or Discrimination in sport
- We offer a safe place for people to raise concerns about behaviour they’ve witnessed or experienced in sport
What allegations we don't manage
However, we cannot manage allegations of conduct that relates to the following:
- Bullying
- Harassment
- Team/representative selection
- Organisational governance
- Competition rules
- Competition manipulation or
- Sports gambling
In these instances, Sport Integrity Australia can provide guidance about how to resolve those issues through other means. These means may include through the sport itself, the Australian Human Rights Commission, or law enforcement to investigate criminal matters, for example.
Learn more about what we do
Sport Integrity Australia aims to protect athletes, prevent doping, and maintain the integrity of Australian sport from the elite level right down to grassroots.
Our focus is policy development, intelligence, anti-doping, investigations, education, outreach, capability building and independent complaint handling to address serious integrity issues that arise in sport around discrimination, abuse and the safeguarding of children.
Our work covers:
Anti-doping
We are Australia’s national anti-doping agency. Australia is required to implement anti-doping arrangements in accordance with the principles of the World Anti-Doping Code, which is designed to protect athletes’ rights, and ensure the process is the same no matter where an athlete is tested in the world.
We also collaborate with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), overseas anti-doping organisations and other stakeholders to further the Australian Government’s efforts to strengthen anti-doping practices globally. Our anti-doping services are informed by our Science, Medicine and Intelligence teams who work to detect, deter and disrupt all manner of threats to integrity in sport.
Safeguarding
We are committed to Australian sporting environments that are safe, supportive and welcoming for children and young people. Sport Integrity Australia has developed policies and programs to ensure the wellbeing and safety of those participating in sports across the country.
By developing national safeguarding policies, programs, resources and education we are helping to build the capacity and capability of sporting organisations and individuals to provide safe sporting environments.
Competition Manipulation
In June 2011, all governments in Australia agreed to the National Policy on Match-Fixing in Sport. This policy represents a commitment by the Commonwealth and state and territory governments to work together to address match-fixing activities with the aim of protecting the integrity of sport.
We combat illegal activities such as competition manipulation (also known as match-fixing) by using coordinated responses. We work with governments, sports, regulators, wagering service providers and law enforcement agencies to keep sports clean.
Sports Wagering
The Review of Australia’s Sports Integrity Arrangements (Wood Review) identified wagering as a growing threat to sport integrity. In response, Sport Integrity Australia has worked to develop an appropriate model for streamlined regulation following ongoing detailed consultation with stakeholders including, sports, Wagering Service Providers and state and territory regulators.
A consistent set of rules
For the first time we have national standards regardless of which sport an athlete participates in which sets out expectations and behaviours to ensure everyone involved in sport is treated with respect and dignity.
The National Integrity Framework is a consistent set of policies that all members of sport need to follow. The first of its kind globally, the National Integrity Framework houses policy templates which have been developed by Sport Integrity Australia in consultation with sport sector partners as a best practice and consistent approach to protecting against integrity threats in sport.
Education is key
Education plays a key role in helping us protect the integrity of sport and help athletes at all levels make the right decisions.
Our education targets athletes, future athletes, coaches, support personnel, parents and teachers – and takes many forms: online, face-to-face, outreach, apps and virtual reality.
Our Athlete Educators are current and former Australian athletes, who have lived and breathed the testing process and are aware of the integrity risks within their sporting environment.
We work with National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) and National Sporting Organisations for People with Disability (NSODs) and athletes to deliver comprehensive education programs on topics including anti-doping, match fixing, illicit drugs and ethical decision making.
