Powerful intelligence partnership ‘crucial’ to protect sport

Sport Integrity Australia has today entered a formal agreement with the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) to ensure Sport Integrity Australia is equipped now and into the future to deal with integrity threats to Australian sport.

Sport Integrity Australia Chief Executive Officer David Sharpe says the partnership will deliver a broad range of intelligence capabilities and information sharing to ensure the protection and integrity of sport is maintained.

This partnership is critical to equipping the agency with the capabilities required to deal with the challenges we face ahead.

“Partnerships like this are crucial in helping us protect the integrity of Australian sport and the health and welfare of those who participate in sport,” Mr Sharpe says.

Sport Integrity Australia and the ACIC will work in partnership to protect sports from a broad range of existing and emerging domestic and global threats.

The agreement will enhance previous arrangements and will include the secondment of ACIC personnel to help develop the framework for the delivering of Stage 2 of Sport Integrity Australia, which includes developing policy and potential regulation around match fixing, betting, wagering and whistle blower protection.

ACIC Chief Executive Officer Michael Phelan says the collaboration offers a “mutual benefit” to both organisations.

“Collaborations such as this with Sport Integrity Australia will go a long way to strengthening the protective measures already in place,” Mr Phelan says. 

“Together we are stronger, and this agreement will ensure the coordination of a national approach to all sports integrity matters as they emerge.”
