Sport Integrity Australia attends inaugural Oceania WADA forum
Last week senior members of Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) attended the inaugural World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) forum for Ministers Responsible for Sport in Oceania, held in Samoa.
SIA’s Deputy CEO, Luke McCann and Head of International Relationships and Strategy, Darren Mullaly attended the forum in Apia, Samoa alongside partners from across the region to share insights into anti-doping activities.
The meeting brought together representatives from 15 countries including 8 Sport Ministers who are committed to delivering anti-doping policy in the region with the aim of keeping sport safe.
The two-day forum concluded with the signing of the Apia Declaration which outlines a commitment to upholding the World Anti-Doping Code (The Code) and the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport.
Deputy CEO, Luke McCann said the forum demonstrated the importance of supporting other National Anti-Doping Organisations (NADO) and countries in the Oceania region.
“It was wonderful to be in the room and exchange knowledge with our Samoan and international anti-doping counterparts,” said Mr McCann.
“We each have a significant role to play, particularly within our own region, to ensure that we as national anti-doping organisations are supporting each other and continue to push for clean and fair sport.
“It was encouraging to be part of the 15 representative nations who signed the Apia Declaration, demonstrating our commitment and unified approach to promoting clean and fair sport in the Oceania region.
“There are several major sporting events that will take place in our region in the coming years, and we look forward to working with our Oceania partners to make them a success.”
As part of the Apia Declaration a commitment was made to hold the forum bi-annually as a continued effort to delivering cohesive and effective Anti-Doping policy within the Oceania region.
