Working at Sport Integrity Australia

Our role is to provide advice and assistance to counter the:

Use of prohibited substances and methods in sport
Abuse of children and other persons in a sporting environment
Manipulation of sporting competitions
Failure to protect members of sporting organisations and other persons in a sporting environment from bullying, intimidation, discrimination, or harassment.

Sporting organisations, and other stakeholders, benefit from the ability to deal with a single nationally coordinated organisation to address all sport integrity issues. We are here to offer guidance on integrity matters to sports that don’t have developed integrity capabilities.

Our focus is policy development, intelligence, investigations (primarily of doping cases), education, outreach and capability building. We also function as Australia's National Anti-Doping Organisation.

Selection process

Application

To apply for a position with us you need to submit an online application through our current opportunities page.

You will need to provide:

Your personal details
A page pitch telling us how your skills, experience and qualifications makes you the best candidate for this opportunity.
Your résumé, detailing your work experience and qualifications.

Once we receive your application, our selection committee will read it and determine whether you will be shortlisted for progression to the next stage of the assessment process.

Assessment

We use a range of techniques to assess and validate skills, experience, qualifications and fit for the role. This may include:

Written tasks
Phone or in-person interviews.
Referee reports.
Other assessments

You should be available for assessment from the date applications close. If you will not be contactable for any length of time during the selection process, you should advise the relevant contact officer.

Referees

Referee reports enable the selection committee to verify the information obtained in your application and during assessment activities. Your referees may be contacted at any stage during the selection process.

It is important that you advise your referees you have applied for a role at Sport Integrity Australia, and that you feel confident they will be able to support the information you have provided.

Outcome

We make all selection decisions based on merit.

This means that the:

Selection process is fair and consistent.
Assessment is based on the inherent requirements of the role.
Process determines the best person for the role is selected.

We will contact you to advise you of the outcome by phone or email.

If you are placed in a merit pool, this means that while you may not receive an offer of employment in the process you applied for, you may be considered for similar roles that arise in Sport Integrity Australia over the next 12 months.

Commencement

If you are the selected candidate, you will be contacted to discuss your engagement. This will include things like your classification, salary, security clearance and start date. You will also need to complete any relevant new starter paperwork.

Security Clearance

It is important to note that before you can commence at Sport Integrity Australia, you must undergo a security assessment (referee and Australian Federal Police check) and gain a valid security clearance. This will usually take 6 weeks but can take longer in some circumstances.

All roads lead to integrity

Sport integrity is clearly at the forefront of what motivates James in his professional and academic endeavours, holding a Graduate Diploma in Sports Law from The University of Melbourne and a Masters in Public Policy from the ANU.

Combining his ten years of experience within the Victoria Police Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit (SIIU), the AFL and the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has made James a valuable asset to the work done at Sport Integrity Australia.

When James saw a job advertised within the agency he jumped at the opportunity.

“When I saw the role advertised it was too good an opportunity not to apply. While the role is similar to the work I did at Victoria Police, Sport Integrity Australia being a national agency provides greater opportunities for collaboration and impact, both domestically and internationally”.

According to James the work done at Sport Integrity Australia is much more than meets the eye.

“We aren’t just interested in catching cheats. Whilst that’s an important part of what we do, I’ve been really impressed with the focus we have on education, prevention and deterrence and on creating an environment that fosters greater participation in sport, particularly for women and girls.”

A sports enthusiast himself, James has always had an affinity for team sports and the social benefits it provides but now as a parent, James has a deeper appreciation for keeping sport clean, fair and safe for all.

More than just a job

Holding a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours) from the University of Sydney, Rima gained practical experience as an analytical chemist with the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory (ASDTL).

Rima joined Sport Integrity Australia in its infancy when she, the agency and the world were experiencing a lot of uncertainty.

“As my research assistant contract was coming to an end with the ASDTL, I was looking for future opportunities. It was 2020, so the world felt less stable. My previous supervisor had heard of a position going at Sport Integrity Australia and recommended that I apply. It worked out and I’ve been here ever since!”

Rima, who says she has ‘essentially grown up in Anti-Doping’ has a profound appreciation for sport and what it can do for the community.

Reflecting on what she enjoys about working at Sport Integrity Australia Rima loves the dedication to the cause of keeping sport safe and fair.

“So many people within the agency are involved in sport at varying levels, so the passion, drive and learnt experiences drive change.”

Passion for sport and community are what drives her dedication to clean sport and have resulted in one of her career highlights. In 2021 Rima’s research paper ‘For research use only: A comprehensive analysis of SARMs and related IPEDs purchased on local Australian websites between 2017 and 2018’ was published in the Performance Enhancement and Health journal and has had a wide impact on our understanding of Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs) and other performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs) in Australia.

Throwing caution to the wind

As a Certificated Practicing Accountant with a bachelor’s degree in commerce and accounting Bec was comfortable in her long-standing finance role before an opportunity at Sport Integrity Australia came knocking.

“A friend of a friend told me Sport Integrity Australia was a place worth looking at. I wasn’t really looking to move; I was content and pretty comfortable in my role – but that changed when I met the CEO. The passion and vision for the agency was exciting to me, I threw contentment out the window and decided this place would give me a renewed energy and sense of purpose.”

As a business owner herself Bec gravitated to the like-minded attitude toward inclusivity at Sport Integrity Australia.

“I have run my own business for a number of years, a 24/7 Gym. My goal was to create an environment where people felt welcome, accepted and safe – attracting people that wouldn’t ordinarily be comfortable stepping into a gym. I wanted to promote healthy living to high school aged kids, keep elderly people moving and give them an important social aspect to their lives. Sport is important to me personally because it releases endorphins which keep my stress levels low to allow me to tackle life challenges and make me feel genuinely happy!”

Bec says the unique remit of Sport Integrity Australia has offered up opportunities she wouldn’t have had otherwise.

“A career highlight has been my appointment to the WADA Finance and Administration Committee. I represent Australia and the Oceania providing financial advice, recommendations and guidance to WADA Management and Boards, to the Minister for Sport and CEO of Drug Free Sport New Zealand on behalf of the agency. I have had the opportunity to travel internationally, meet amazing people from around the world and learn things about the global anti-doping regime that I wouldn’t get as a CFO in any other job.”
